    Privacy and protection

When you log in to and make use of the government's various online services, you naturally want to be sure about a number of things. For example, you expect that:

    • your online data (name, address, telephone numbers, etc.) are well protected
    • your online data are handled responsibly
    • the chance of identity fraud is as small as possible
    • your privacy is respected
    • ...

CSAM understands the importance of both your privacy and the integrity of your personal data, so CSAM takes them into account when developing and offering the login service and associated digital keys.

The following subjects give a brief explanation about logging in and the use of your data.

The difference between privacy and security

Security: data is used only by the right parties and cannot be stolen.

Privacy: the parties also use these data only for the agreed purposes. For example, your personal data and information may not be resold or given to third parties without your permission and knowledge.

Security is necessary so as to be able to guarantee privacy!

Logging in with an eID card reader offers the highest level of security, and so this is the standard way to log in. You can activate the other digital keys only after you've first logged in with your eID (identity card, foreigner's card or kids ID). In this way, the security of all digital keys is assured.

All of the digital keys CSAM offers are secure for logging on to the online government services!

Privacy and security of digital keys

The digital keys are divided into different security levels. For some digital keys the user-friendliness is higher, but the security is a bit lower.

A digital key of a lower security level does not offer access to all (parts of) online services. The security level of a particular digital key determines to which online government service you receive access.

Privacy and security of your personal data

Your data are securely stored in sources that are managed by neutral government authorities.* Because they are managed in a single central place, the "only once principle" can be applied. This means that your data are only requested a single time, and all government authorities can consult them, if necessary, in a neutral, common source. Naturally, this takes place under strict privacy conditions.

The Privacy Commission is constantly monitoring respect of the privacy rules. You can find more information about this at the website of the Privacy Commission.

The privacy and security of the one-time login

One-time logging in takes place under these conditions:

    • You must first have logged in with a digital key having a high security level. Do you want access to a high-security government service, but you're logged in with a digital key having a lower security level? Then you must log in once again with a digital key of a higher security level.
    • The personal data that are known about you are NOT SHARED amongst the online government services. The one-time login only means that you won't have to identify yourself several times.
